This week Al Smith caught up with a long time Upstate Racing League member whose membership dates back to the humble beginnings of the league. This driver is a three time champion and is looking to add another championship this season.
Al Smith: Justin Fuller, thanks for sitting down with me. How are you?
Justin Fuller: I’m doing great Al, how have you been?
AS: Been very good and busy getting ready for this season as have many others. You have been racing with our league from the beginning, 6 seasons ago. You have helped us get it off the ground and taught me how to admin hot keys, I’m still getting it, but what are the key elements that keep you coming back?
JF: The competition continues to get better every season. It’s been awesome to see some of the guys that struggled when they first started, to now be competing for wins and championships. Car counts are great & the racing has been fantastic for a short track series.
AS: You won the first three seasons in a row and have been in contention every year for the championship or in the championship conversation. That is saying something especially with it being a short track series where every week is a wild card race it seems like. This season, what are your expectations?
JF: Expectations are always the same with the Aftermath Motorsports #51 team. Go out and do our best, get the most points possible, and of course get some wins. The past few seasons have been great, until the chase starts and then it seems to go downhill. We are going to try and change that this season and get our 4th title.
AS: We wish you all the best of luck. You have been at the practice sessions this season and what or who has been the biggest surprise or challenge for you looking forward?
JF: There was a couple rookies in the summer series that looked pretty impressive. Will be interesting to see how they do. Nicklas Rasmussen has been the most improved driver over the years, and he will be a force this coming season I am sure. Adam Hamel also is looking really good. Competition won’t be an issue this season, there will be plenty of it
AS: Outside of racing here at the URL, what do you do with your free time?
JF: Well when I’m not working, I’ll be at a race track of some sort or racing on iRacing in general. But most importantly, if it’s one of my days with my son, I’ll be spending as much time as I can with him
AS: Sounds like you have your hands full there! Is there anything else you would like the public or fellow racers know about you that they might now know?
JF: He is quite the handful and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Not really sure anything about me is too exciting.
AS: Well I personally would like to thank you for all the help over the years and wish you the best this season.
JF: Yes, not a problem I enjoy helping when and where I can. And thank you, I’m looking forward to the new season. We should have our sponsor announced here soon with the car wrapped up. Should be pretty sweet looking!
AS: We are looking forward to that. Well thank you for your time! See you on the track soon!
